Mathematics 6701       Mathematical Methods of Applied Science      Course Description

Class times: MWF 3:00 p.m., in Room 212 of the ESM Building.

Instructor: Evans Harrell, Skiles 218D, tel. 894-9203, e-mail harrell@math.gatech.edu

Instructor's office periods: M 4:00-5:00, WF 1:00-2:00, Skiles 218D

Texts:

Prerequisites: Linear algebra at the level of Math 4305 and ordinary differential equations at the level of Math 2403. Note: Math 6701 is not intended as a first course in linear algebra or differential equations. If you need those, you are encouraged to register instead for the prerequisite courses. Our review of the material of those courses will be too rapid and sketchy to substitute for them. Our class will begin with a diagnostic quiz to assess your preparation.

Grading and requirements: There will be exams on

Homework problems will be assigned and reviewed but not graded. They might, however, appear on the exams. You will have an opportunity to review your class standing from the Web page.

Missed and rescheduled tests. Special accommodations for tests are discouraged and, other than documented medical emergencies, require written permission form the instructor two weeks in advance. It is the student's responsibility to take the initiative for any such accommodations.

Description: In this course graduate students in engineering will refresh and extend their preparation in the parts of classical mathematics which are most useful in everyday engineering - linear algebra, ordinary differential equations, and functions of a complex variable.
